I can’t believe I am actually writing “19.1” in reference to an Open WOD. I still remember with vivid detail when the “Open” was floated to the CrossFit community.
I always considered myself lucky to have “grown up” in what was like “HQ2” of CrossFit during the surge of popularity from 2009-2014/15. The Northeast, centered around Boston, with Again Faster Equipment and it’s media arm serving as a major source of CrossFit media, info, and athlete promotion, quickly became a center of CrossFit growth outside of the West Coast where CrossFit considered home.
I was working at CF Fenway along with Coach Stacey and some other now “OG” Crossfitters when we heard about the end of Sectionals and a new sponsorship with Reebok. People cried about “selling out” worst than I remember people did with the band 311 after the Grassroots album and the release of the “Blue Album”.
Basically, people were pissed. None of us could believe they were eliminating the loved in person weekend competition of Sectionals that we all strived for each year, and on top of it were bringing in a corporate sponsor we all knew would for sure destroy functional fitness as we know it.
Needless to say we were all wrong. Reebok gyms didn’t start popping up everywhere and putting us all out of business. Reebok athletes pumped full of steroids and body armor didn’t start winning all Regionals and the Games. To be honest all that happened was good. CrossFit gained a massive following in exposure, more and more people got introduced to a great model of fitness, and a great competitive environment was created for people who truly deserved it.
I can’t believe that was 8 years ago. I can’t believe we are now facing another monumental change that will be equally as astronomical when all is said and done. We are going from Regionals to no Regionals, Games focus to Not So Much Games Focus, and 2 Opens in the year 2019. To be honest I don’t even really know what is going on, but what I do know is the Open for Spring of 2019 starts this Saturday, and we will be ready.
Open WOD “19.1” is a 15 Minute AMRAP of 19 Calories Rowing and 19 Wall Ball. Or maybe the other way around. Either way, it’s rowing and wall ball, and all of us can crush it. We will be throwing down in Woburn at 10am on Saturday. Get signed up and arrive ready to go. If you have done it in years past, it’s much of the same. If this is new to you, show up and be ready to go.
- There WILL be classes on Saturday AM at both locations. Time TBA tomorrow (Friday). They will be before the Open at 10am.
