I’m not usually one to go on memorializing events like the 9-11-2001 tragedy. No idea why really, probably because it’s not really something to celebrate if you know what I mean. I also think for this in particular I wasn’t affected directly by it. This isn’t some at the time ignorant college student who stayed in his bubble while the worst American tragedy happened kind of perspective. I am just lucky. I lost nobody in any way shape or form, during or after 9-11. So other than the wars and total change in our world safety wise, I wasn’t affected. I am lucky and thankful for that.
However, I do believe in remembering these things through present day actions. It’s the one thing I truly know I can say I remember where I was when it happened. Clearly and vividly remember exactly where I was. Sucks that again such a tragedy is my one forever memory in my life but it is what it is. The people who are affected by these tragedies are never over it. Never the same. The outpouring of support and love stops at some point, but their lives continue to be forever changed by loss, whether of a loved one or of innocence and safety in their own lives.
So I guess my reasoning nowadays for doing a Hero WOD on a day like this is we can all help someone who is still suffering from what happened from this tragedy. I believe that this day is now different. There are teenagers and young adults who weren’t even alive when this happened now. We are at the point where this is becoming history, not as raw and fresh in the minds of those who lived through it. Probably a good thing.
I say use this Hero WOD as a chance to be reminded that there are people out there who might need extra love and care today. Because a terrible thing happened 17 years ago their lives were changed forever, never able to be the same positive or innocent level it was even the evening before. Rather than lament over how awful it all was, remember how positive we can all be to someone that needs it. Imagine then if we acted this way every day, memorial or not?!
