Acting Sergeant, 2nd Battalion, The Rifles – British Army. He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Sgt. McGrath died when he was caught in a roadside bomb blast while on foot patrol in the Gereshk district of central Helmand province.
Aged 28, from Buckinghamshire. He enlisted in October 1999 and joined the Royal Green Jackets infantry unit the next year. He specialised as a Mortarman and planned to attend the platoon sergeants battle course after his deployment. He was described as a fearless and intensely energetic soldier with endless potential.
Sgt. McGrath leaves behind his wife Emma, sons Ryan Daniel and Dylan, infant daughter Niamh, and other family and friends.
